Fibrid - Every city is an organism - eating, breathing, reproducing and producing waste. Fibrid began as a senior thesis collaboration at the University of the Arts focusing on paper as an abundant waste material in the city of Philadelphia, and the massive community of transient apartment dwellers as a potential audience for design. Through a collaboration with a local packaging manufacturer, Fibrid created the first molded fiber furnishings made exclusively from reclaimed paper. The seating and storage devices were designed to address domestic needs as well as to introduce the potential of molded fiber as a beautiful and structural material for fashionable yet sustainable design. Link - Distance learning curricula allow students and teachers to extend the learning environment beyond the four walls of the classroom, sharing information and resources around the world. The Link project consisted of a team of four with an objective to redesign the distance learning experience into a simple-to-use classroom tool for everyday use by all age groups. Extensive research and observation revealed that current systems fail at an attempt to replicate typical classroom settings rather than exploring new capabilites afforded by digital technology. This approach let to a design for a large-scale, portable unit that discards antiquated technologies and traditional class structures for a learning model based on active participation and face to face interaction. Link is designed to be operated by the teacher or professor using a web-based network for hosting and visiting classes.
Flange - A two day project to design an inexpensive, functional object using existing construction materials. The three lighting configurations use egg carton foam and air filters to diffuse light emitted from a galvanized steel chimney duct. Typical bulding techniques call for extensive measures to conceal these materials behind walls and ceilings. The Flange light series exposes them, calling attention to their unique textures, forms and colors.
Use(r) - A collaboration to convert a high traffic hallway at the entrance of The University of the Arts' visual arts building into an exhibit for the annual Senior Industrial Design show. The concept for the exhibit was driven by exposing the process of design, educating the university community as to why and how objects are designed the way they are. The layers of the structure created windows into the design process, representing the layers of issues that inform design decisions. The installation was fabricated with corrugated cardboard and blue modeling foam.
