The building I designed is a spa with an overarching theme of healing of the mind and body. The long room (which is not pictured) is a steam room, and the tall room is a greenhouse. While the relationship between the two programs is quite similar in that they are both porous and related to heat, a strong duality exists between the two. The steam room represents physical healing—it is an isolated, contained and dark space with a foggy and indistinct atmosphere. On the other hand, the greenhouse embodies spiritual healing—it is an open and clear space with an abundance of light. Because south-facing windows receive the most direct sunlight and north-facing windows receive the least amount of direct sunlight, the top pods facing south require the most light. Hence, the top pods are filled with plants that need the most sunlight while the bottom pods are filled with shade plants.
