'Hotel Carmine' is my final project as a student at the University of Louisville. The original building's key feature is the three-story high arch windows that mimic the setting sun. These windows and their view inspired me to bring nature indoors in a modern way. I wanted the strip of wall that joins the two arches to compliment the windows and to get some attention of its own. The twilight sky provided the perfect hue for the space: carmine.
This is a picture of the preexisting space, Lutz Hall on UofL's campus. The all white interior and central staircase served as a blank canvas for my design.
I made many changes to the original floor plan in order to create a dramatic and client-friendly environment. The center stairs were replaced with a less imposing front desk and coat room. The old terrazzo floor, now an earthy stained concrete. A comfortable seating area gives guests plenty of space to unwind.
Large hanging lanterns accent the stairwell in this partial reflected ceiling plan. Can lights underneath the second story walkway illuminate the path to the restrooms and additional elevators.
This elevation displays the grand scale of Hotel Carmine's lobby and how I accentuated its architectural features, not blocked them.
The second story has a small nook that overlooks the lobby in which guests can make a private phone call.
Here is the floor plan for the cozy area that patrons might call a cab or loved one from.
A conceptual sketch of the lofty hideaway at Hotel Carmine.
