In general, Nicaragua is largely unspoiled. The country is home to the second largest rainforest outside of the Amazon with pristine coastline stretching on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Due to years of political unrest and guerrilla warfare, most tourists left Nicaragua alone flocking to other Latin American countries such as Costa Rica and Panama. While these two countries in particular were becoming well-oiled tourist machines, Nicaragua was settling into its current state of becoming a nearly untouched paradise for backpackers and low-key tourists and surfers.
