Nexus - Kitchens are for living - Nexus is a Kitchen environment, designed as part of a team (with Tara Whelan & Shane Kearney) for a Miele sponsored competition.
Nexus facilitates all the activities demanded of a modern kitchen:
suitable for the bachelor entertainer, cooking with flair as his guests look on, parents can help children with homework as the dinner is prepared, people of limited strength can cook whilst seated.
Nexus celebrates the kitchen, encourages a multifunctional space & allows maximum efficiency.
Layout - Nexus includes the following features:
-Sink unit
-Waste management capability
-Herb garden
-Induction surface
-Lounging/seating area for minimum 4 adults
-Ultra-sonic dishwasher unit

The entire surface of the unit is to be an induction surface. - Advantages:
-full use of all space available
-ability to cook whilst seated for those with limited strength
Foreseeable disadvantages:
-may be danger in accidentally heating other ferrous materials on the surface of the island, e.g. scissors, utensils etc. A master on/off switch would be included in the kitchen, so that the induction could be switched off when not cooking.
Multi-functional sink area - Sink unit
-A traditional deep sink with “pot filler†tap on a long hose
-A shallow, sloped sink with a slot to drop vegetable peelings directly into the bin for compostable waste underneath.
Waste management capability
-The space under the sink will be occupied by five waste bins of equal width:
1.Non-recyclable kitchen waste
2.Recyclable Paper
3.Recyclable Cans
4.Recyclable Glass
5.Compostable waste

Ultra-sonic dishwasher - Ultra-Sonic cleaning works by producing ultrasonic waves in water that in turn create cavitation bubbles which break off dirt as they collapse.
Plates and cups are stacked inside the dishwasher, easily accessible in the bottom drawer of the left hanging unit.
Advantages of this feature include:
-Eliminates need for harsh detergents and copious amounts of water
-Ultrasonic washing can also be used to remove 99% of leftover pesticides from fruit and vegetables
Social space - Lounging/seating area for minimum 4 adults
The semi-hexagonal seating area can comfortably hold two people lounging and two seated upright, although more can be accommodated if all adopt an upright, seated position.
This area can be used for:
-Relaxing in the kitchen space
-Children helping to cook or being supervised doing homework etc
-Seating guests while cooking at the opposite side, allowing cooks to show off their flair in the kitchen.
-Casual dining
