Examining executive pay - This photo illustration and graphics package helped illustrate the annual executive pay story in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Because these stories happen every year, it becomes more and more difficult to illustrate them differently. While using a microscope isn't unique, the fact that this story focused on the health care industry made it more relevant. The illustration was constructed in Photoshop from digital photos of a $20 bill and stock art of a microscope.
Debut of the Mac Mini - This San Diego Union-Tribune Business page centerpiece took a conceptual approach to explaining the gist of the new Apple hardware. To differentiate from the high likelihood that every other newspaper would use photos of Steve Jobs up on stage in a black mock turtleneck, I tried to get right to the news of the event: With this new mac, you could throw away your old PC tower but keep all the peripherals, whatever they may be.
Magazine shopping bags - To illustrate this San Diego Union-Tribune trend story of shopping magazines, I decided to merge the concept of reading a magazine with the traditional shopping experience. Using a flatbed scanner and Photoshop, I reconstituted the magazines and added the shopping bag handles. In hindsight, I think the overall illustration would have been improved if each magazine-bag had more depth. Because of the deadline constraints of the daily news cycle, this was what I produced given the allotted time.
Oil-soaked currency - For this San Diego Union-Tribune Sunday Business special report, I worked with a staff photographer to shoot the running oil effect, and then combined the separate photo of the U.S. and European currencies in Photoshop.
Five that thrive - For this Philadelphia Inquirer Business section centerpiece about companies succeeding in the recession, the idea of surviving in a drought was discussed. Through stock photo research, I came up with this background image, and the concept came together.
