'Pride' In ancient times the peacock was a symbol of rejuvenation. One of the very special things about the peacock is that it can eat poisionous snakes without being harmed - which I felt was a perfect connection between my own chemotherpy and the idea of injecting poison into your body but still being able to survive it.
'Rising from the Ashes' Winner of UNIS Literature Magazine's Art Competition 2012 The Phoenix bird is a mythological creature representing rebirth and rejuvenation. I felt that I could relate to the myth of this bird and the strong symbolism that I carries. The idea of "dying" but being reborn as a stronger and better person. Hidden in the tail of the bird is an orange ribbon representing the cancer awareness ribbon for leukemia. The background is gold symbolizing the color of the ribbon for childhood cancer.

Rising from the Ashes

At the young age of 8 I was diagnosed with Leukemia. I was fortunante enough to survive while some many others don't. I created these two pieces as a symbol of cancer and how people can rise from the ashes.
