The Analytics and Reporting Console (ARC)....Looks nice....but how did I get here? And what does it do? Arriving at a final solution of a design is a drawn out messy process. Each stage of research and investigation exposed flaws and provides opportunities to improve the design and clarifies the product goals. In this project, allow me share with you a few details of the general design process I followed to help define, design and build the Enterprise Dashboard of the ARC.
At Digital Guardian, Product Managers are in touch with the end users and define the features needed for ARC based upon their interactions with customers. These new features are prioritized and defined for the product team to follow during implementation. Once we have our product requirements , the UX Team will spend time reading, mentally digesting what it is we need to build.
Once product requirements are clearly understood by the UX team, we'll begin to brainstorm solutions. This can include taskflows, whiteboarding, lots of arguing (the good kind) - all of this allows us to brainstorm initial ideas of product requirements with stakeholders. Quick, messy, disposable designs.
Paper Prototypes - quickly sketch and capture ideas, flow, layout to test with stakeholders and/or targeted users. The data I get from running it by users I use to start refining the design. Testing continues throughout the whole process - test as frequently as possible and at various resolutions. I'll make both paper and interactive prototypes in Invision or build my own in HTML. There's also lots of great online tools for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Increasing Fidelity in Mockups - As our low fidelity mockups serve their purpose of proving out a proper organization to a page and, additionally, that it can effectively demonstrate an easy-to-follow workflow model for our users, we'll start to focus on the "look and feel" of the page. I start to consider issues of color, alignment with company branding, typography, etc...as I slowly refine the appearance of the design for delivery.
Spot Refinement - Specific elements may need refinement.
