"Hungry Hippo" RC Recycling Machine
Problem:
This RC machine was designed to collect recyclables from the ground, lift the contents two feet into the air, and release into a recycle bin. The objective was to collect and deposit as many items as possible in 3 minutes.
Specifications:
Limited provided materials (sheet metal, round stock brass and aluminum, motors, etc.), design and construct in 8 weeks
Final Design Description:
Powered by a motor and connected via multiple linkages, the “hungry hippo” mechanism scoops up items by raising up and over them and pulling inwards, then two sprockets are driven up a plastic chain (cog railway) to lift the collector as the chassis drives the whole machine into place to release the items into the recycle bin.
