Flapping Foil Vessel Propulsion System
Problem:
A novel flapping foil propulsion system has been optimized for large vessels to yield a much higher fuel efficiency than conventional propeller systems, and needed to be analyzed for the application to the smaller vessel industry.
Specifications:
Analyze the blade hydrodynamics via varying design parameters to find optimal thrust and efficiency values.
Final Design Description:
The rotation of the individual blades was controlled by an Arduino wired to stepper motors and a gear motor controlling the rotation of the entire system (based on a position sensor). A spring scale was attached in the testing flume to measure the thrust produced. Efficiency was calculated based on the power input and the thrust produced. The results were compared to a CFD model to validate future investment on this concept.
