MCM - In 2007, I was rewarded Honorable Mention in the International Mathematical Contest in Modeling, which was held by U.S. National Security Agency and Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications. This contest is a four-day mathematics competition which strongly focuses on research, originality, teamwork, communication and justification of results. Around one thousand international teams of three undergraduates compete to produce original mathematical papers in response to one modeling problem.
Gerrymandering - Gerrymandering is a term that describes the deliberate rearrangement of the boundaries of congressional districts to influence the outcome of elections.
In this contest, we should draw congressional districts for a state. We need to create the “simplest†shapes for all the districts in a state and make sure each district in the state contains the same population. During the four-day competition, we established 5 models, 2 algorithms, and accomplished a paper with 31 pages finally.
