In This Skin: first garment - For my senior thesis, I used fashion design to create garments that embody myths and ideas surrounding weight loss. My first garment realizes the baseless idea that there is a skinny person inside of all us. The patchworked mesh bodysuit represents that underdeveloped skinny person inside, while the voluminous tulle “fat suit” represents the beautiful bigger person that houses the skinny person.

In This Skin: second garment - For my senior thesis, I used fashion design to create garments that embody myths and ideas surrounding weight loss. My second garment, a tunic and leggings made of yards and yards of skin-colored jersey, takes the consequence of massive weight loss, excess skin, and turns it into something beautiful and glamorous.

In This Skin: development - To get the pattern for the bodysuit from the first garment, I draped lycra on a dressform, making sure the drape was smooth and tight, pinning as I went along. I marked all the appropriate landmarks (waist, apex, armscye, etc) directly onto the lycra and used those markings to guide me in creating the pattern.

In This Skin: development - I used a stuffed arm to create the pattern for the sleeve of the bodysuit.
In This Skin: development - I used black mesh as the base of the bodysuit, hand-stitching patches of various knits as well as wool yarn for coverage.
