The Appalachian Centre for Performing Arts
I am proposing to re-design the existing Farthing Auditorium located on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Issues associated with this project are as follows: Outdated and inefficient ff&e, lack of adequate restrooms including unisex and accessible facilities, need for a secondary performance/ multi-purpose area, lack of warm-up and rehearsal spaces, inadequate acoustics, sightlines, and wayfinding.
The conceptual and aesthetic design is rooted in the geometric planes of a polished gem. These facets are interpreted in many of the architectural features throughout the building. The overall form of the building in plan view reflects the shape and structure of a gem, including the lobby opening from the main entrance up to the third level. The main focal wall in the reception hall stretches from the main floor to the ceiling of the third. It is an abstracted visualization of the geometric planes of a gem, in a more organized pattern.
