Harmony House
Received Honorable Mention
The Harmony House is an un-conventional shelter located in Seattle, WA targeted for homeless and runaway youth, ages 10-17. The first floor houses a soup & sandwich shop that features organic and locally harvested items. The Harmony House offices, group and individual mentoring rooms, restrooms, and reception are also on the same level. The second floor is where the youth live during their stay. It houses three separate common areas, 6 bedrooms, a restroom, a shower room, and a work station for the counselor's. Sustainable finishes, furniture, equipment and mechanical systems guided the design as a whole. The space is rooted in the concept of a path, the way that it is rarely ever straight, or well lit. Along paths one arrives at niches and views that become like a sanctuary, a place of thought and reflection. The design reflects the need for these types of spaces through architectural niches, public and private spaces, corridors and paths of circulation.
