In certain cultures, especially the Japanese and Nordic, it is customary to remove shoes upon entering a home. Reasons for these customs range from the religious to the hygienic.
In Japanese homes, an area called the genkan near the doorway of the home is dedicated to shoes.
With this project, I aimed to extend the idea of genkan into the American cultural vernacular by referencing the western tradition of hatstands
