Big cats need places for climbing, hiding, sunning themselves, or escaping the sun on hot summer days. And when combined with the cool water of a concrete pool, the perch and pool environments at Sandstone, Minnesota's Wildcat Sanctuary strike a dramatic composition befitting the amazing animals they serve. The pools were sculpted to be just deep enough for the comfort of the big cats, and were constructed to be filled and emptied from outside the enclosure housing them. This feature in conjunction with an additional hose attachment, directly adjacent to the pool to aid in cleaning both pool and platforms is of great assistance to the animal caretakers charged with keeping the environment tidy. The healthy sized platforms were designed for sturdiness, to echo the forested surroundings of the sanctuary and to accommodate the big bodies that occupy them with proportional appropriateness. The platforms closest the pools also serve to hide plumbing out of reach of curious claws and jaws.
