The goal of this assignment was to create a printed diagram that visually explained the operation of an object to a person who had perhaps never encountered that object before, and who may not already know its need, its function, or its use. The challenge here was to design a method of conveying time, sequence and action that communicated fluently without words, and at the same time rendered the object in an appropriate and approachable way. My diagram describes the process of opening and using an umbrella to keep from getting wet in the event of a rain shower. “Of one thing we can be sure; we do not see things in the way that common sense says we should.” Sir Francis Crick
