2008 MediaSmart HDTV concept - The original concept for this TV was completed by HP and BMW Designworks, I led the second half of ID development including color and graphics, on-screen displays, user experience, and some unique lighting effects. The custom color was designed to move away from the standard black and silver appearance used by so many competitors and gives the product a more modern appearance that is more in line with the products enhanced functionality.
The base of the TV was created using an in-mold decoration process. The subtle linework on the base is only seen when seen up close and provides a third-read interest without being too flashy. By championing the use of in-mold decoration (IMD) on this part, I was able to demonstrate a dual benefit to HP: Using IMD allowed HP to eliminate the alternative (and expensive) 2-stage paint process which resulted in much higher quality parts that cost less to manufacture.
Summer 2008 MediaSmart TV - Many first-time HDTV owners are unaware that the video cables used on standard TVs do not provide HD quality video. User-experience design principles allowed us to identify a new user need that didn't exist before and then to design a way to meet it. Our team organized the connectors into groups with similar picture quality capabilities that would highlight those differences to users. The graphics were additionally color coded to highlight the connection quality differences.
