RRM - community element - This multi-part project included community services, offices for the client, apartments, retail and services, and family housing. The site was an eight-acre lot immediately to the east of downtown Raleigh. There was an actual client; the project was part of an attempt to generate ideas for the future development of the Raleigh Rescue Mission, which owned the lot. Above is part of the public "community" element of the project, including a library, cafeteria, and offices.
RRM - community element - The same bridge between the first two segments of the community element, as viewed from the bioretention pond. The library is to the right, the chapel required by the program, to the left, looks over the pond and a grove of trees.
RRM - apartment element - The apartment element, on the other end of the multi-segmented community element. The structure combined one and two bedroom units, each with a balcony; this section incorporates a small gymnasium underneath.
RRM - bioretention pond - A view of the model. The bridge between the library and chapel is visible over the pond, with the main RRM offices behind and retail beyond. To the left/south are the family housing units, in chipboard.
RRM - project diagram - A diagram of the elements and layout of the project. The multi-segmented community element connects the quadrants together, and is itself linked with bridge connectors. The retail quadrant wasn't designed beyond its general footprint.
RRM - site plan - An overall plan of the project, showing the various program elements. The curving section of Haywood Street is added as part of the project, as is the one-way access lane behind the housing units. A parking deck is located beneath the playfields behind the retail elements in the northwest corner.
RRM - site model - A plan view of the model, the community and apartments element in white, complete with perforated pedestrian bridges.
RRM - housing unit plan - The plan of the housing unit for the project. Four three-bedroom houses form a unit around a partially-covered courtyard space. All are universally accessible, inclined, covered pathways forming a precession from the street.
RRM - housing unit section - A section through the four-family housing unit, showing the indoor living spaces and the shared courtyard. The roof design unites the parts, as well as collecting water to irrigate the surrounding landscaping.
RRM housing unit model - This model of the housing unit shows the entrance ramps and the perforations of the bedroom walls. The more-solid bedroom element forms an outer shell to the unit.
RRM - housing unit roof - The roof of the housing unit, showing the ramp roofs and the openings over the courtyard.
RRM - housing units from street - Several of the units, as viewed from the street. Each unit has a different color door for easy identification.
RRM - housing unit community space - The shared courtyard space.
