Winning Entry for the Masonry Contractors Association Competition, 2006 North Carolina State College of Design Group project.
MCA Competition - model - This project was the winning competition entry for a Masonry Contractors Association competition at State. It was a group project by a three-person team.
This model was constructed by another team member; I made the drawing used in the background. It illustrates the concepts of the project, including the use of veneer and the steel-reinforced partial arch.
MCA Competition - section - A section through the project. The site was an narrow infill lot in downtown Raleigh, only the front facade was designed.
The concept of the arch was to represent both the compressive abilities of masonry, as well as the face that much modern masonry is used as veneer and relies on other materials for structural stability.
