Black Box & Cinema - rendering - This early project from 2006 was included a black box theatre and a cinema, along with various support spaces. The site was the entry to a large parking deck in downtown Raleigh, where two vehicular ramps had to be maintained, one going up and one going down. The design of the building was derived from this concept of motion, with the program tubes of the building piercing a set of prominent walls perpendicular to the motion.
The rendering was produced with 3ds Max, based on AutoCAD files.
Black Box & Cinema - model
Black Box & Cinema - model - A basswood and museum board model of the project. The atria and upwards vehicle ramp are visible from this angle, as is a glimpse of the stairs.
This was an early project in college, and was thus free of many practical constraints, such as accessibility.
Black Box & Cinema - site insert - A smaller site insert, placed in the large context model built by and for the entire studio.
Black Box & Cinema - plans - A plan of the upper level. The main stairs run through the space between the tubes, emphasizing the direction of movement. The screen of the cinema retracts to allow a view of the city when a film is not in progress.
Black Box & Cinema - elevation and section - The street elevation and the section. The section is cut through the cinema and the black box theater.
Black Box & Cinema - rendered section - A rendered section illustrating the relationship between the two tube elements. Shown are the theater and part of the service element, as well as the glass box of the atrium. Cars move in and out of the parking deck below.
Black Box & Cinema - interior rendering - The entrance to the black box theater from the atrium, digitally rendered.
