Book design. Ken Kesey “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest”.

Student work. Task: "Create the graphic design concept reflecting the book’s feelings and emotions".

I’ve based the design of this book not on representation of its content but on the feeling this book creates. One of the most impressive elements which permeated the whole book is an image of mechanism, a machine without a soul. And it is important that (contrary to the steampunk) this image is not too emphasized here – it is not accented, it is very “natural” but, nevertheless, scary. That's why I choose not to create illustrations of apparatus but to use a photo film – as an image of human lifes which are encased in a lifeless plane. The theme of madness also runs through this book. I’ve decided to depict it in contrast – by charcoal, because it is a natural, “life” material.
