Stripe light - this is a light shade that I created using paper and acrylic rod. The shade covers the sides of light bulb but allows the light in the center to hit the different sections of the shade. This creates an interesting light effect while coving up the strong blinding light of the bulb.
Woven Shade - The Woven Shade was created as a beginning prototype for a light competition. the shade is comprised of newsprint and stapled straws.
Umbrella light - The idea behind the umbrella light is that it can be opened or closed to vary the amount of visible light. When the shade is closed less light is able to penetrate the paper shade. The light shade is made out of paper and the interior umbrella structure is made of plexi glass. The wooden circle at the bottom of the shade allows the light to be opened or closed.

This image shows how the Umbrella light shade can be removed from the stand. The light shade can fold up for storage when not in use.
The Umbrella Light can be opened or closed. The light shade works like an old fashioned umbrella. A small round platform below the shade can be raised or lowered to open or close the shade.

Light Shades I designed for the IESNY Lighting Competition in NY. The designs were supposed to create an interesting interaction between light and shadow. The Umbrella light, a light that can open and close to allow the user to change the quality of light, was the final light I created for the competition. I exhibited the Umbrella Light at the Helen Mills Theater space in NY.
