Each bay on the structure contains a different household material that models a specific type of timbre. These three bays include wooden spoons, plastic containers, and canvas drums.
A view of the canopy as a playing child would experience it. The canopy is built to link the two structures together and elude to the similar timbres located in overlapping bays. It also reflects the tree canopy that shades Hort Woods Child Care Center.

Timbre in the Timber

Completed as a Studio Design-Build Project, this musical play structure was constructed for a child care center on Penn State University's campus. The basic musical concept of the project was requested by the client; as a studio class, we decided to focus on the musical concept of timbre (www.simplifyingtheory.com/timbre/). When designing the project, we considered the existing structures on site, child safety, site circulation, and the philosophies of the childcare center.
