Midtown on the move - This was a fun page to design. The Publisher and Managing Editor wanted to go big on the display. I used this as an opportunity to get really creative. I knew that the midtown area was bound by four freeways. I used that idea to package the story around those elements, which made for an attractive page.

Olympic dreamers - On this particular day, the newspaper was printed on a special kind of newsprint. With this in mind, the page was purposely designed with lots of colorful photos. We took a chance and used a different than normal photo in the sky, which made for an eye-catching presentation.

Kilpatrick jailed - This was a busy news night. Four big stories in one day. This approach gave all the stories good play without shrinking the biggest story, Kilpatrick heading back to jail.

Tax liens, felonies and foreclosures - What seemed at first to be a challenge, due to only mug shots as the main art, ended up forcing me to do something creative with the type treatment. It made for an attractive page. This page was the third-place winner in front page design in the Detroit SPJ 2010 Excellence in Journalism competition.

Fishflies attack! - Attack of the fishflies was the subject. These pesky insects come around for two weeks in the summer. You can find them anywhere near the Detroit riverfront. I decided to play on the pesky theme by using a up-close photo of the insect and making the image pop off the page through the use of a black background and white text. As I was reading the story I decided at the last minute to enlarge and use a different color to the words "the invasion has begun", which I feel told the whole story.
Mistaken Identity? - This display was based on the Detroit Police making errors in the identity of suspects. When the art came in, it only contained several close-up shots of a guy who was arrested in error. I decided to jazz it up by finding another image to make the package more interesting. The image I found on istock was perfect and a great addition to the page. To top it off, I actually got a good headline to work with from the copy desk.
