Church at the end of the Road to Freedom, Gdansk, Poland

Master graduation project completed at University of Technology in Gdansk, Poland.
The project is located in the postindustrial terrain of Gdansk Shipyard. The most prosperous and dynamic period of the industry was in XIX and first half of XX century. After its closure, terrains were planned to be revitalised. It is designed to build a new district called “Young City”. One of the most characteristic elements of the new urban layout is “Road to Freedom” - wide pedestrian promenade, which connects Plac Solidarnosci with the river. My project is situated at the end of the Road to Freedom.

The form of the church is strictly bonded with the Road. It is the culmination of the promenade in sense both symbolic and spacial. It does not only finish the Road but becomes a part of it. People can walk on the roof of the church and reach the view point (about 20 m high) on its top where the whole panorama of Gdansk can be seen. The open space and large field of view symbolises freedom.
