Final Product - This concept ultimately came out very well. The unique elongated form (as opposed to the typical webcam spherical "eyeball" shape) allows the camera aperture to get very close to the actual display, greatly improving the eye-to-eye appearance of the video image. They continue to use this layout on many of their later designs. The integral privacy shade on the side is also a nice detail...
QuickCam Fusion sketch - Some early sketches done in Painter for Logitech's QuickCam Fusion webcam. Note the unique proportion: more about that later...
QuickCam Fusion concept 2 - exploring a more blade-like front bezel, with ta flip up privacy shade
QuickCam Fusion sketch 3 - this was a great idea that didn't get any traction...a webcam on a bendy flexible stalk that mounts to the back of the monitor...you can then pull the camera OVER the display, which gives you better eye-to-eye contact...
Final Product (shield open) - you can see here the privacy shade deployed, and the bendy rubber monitor clip. Due to the vast array of monitor cross sections, these bendy-style clips are really the best way to accomodate as many different monitors as possible.
Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX sketch1 - some very quick sketches for a mid-tier camera...at this point I try to be very gestural and loose, just looking for an interesting proportion, part breakup, sculpting, etc...
logitech QuickCam Communicate STX sketches 3 - starting to explore the integrated privacy shade...
STX Concept 1 - Some Painter exploration...an emerging theme is this outer spherical shell that is sliced to reveal a polished black core...
STX concept 2 - this is ultimately the chosen concept, almost like a watch band wrapped around a core form....
STX concept 3 - an interesting slice through the sphere reveals the focusing ring (green) around the aperture...
Logitech QuickCam Communicate final 1 - Here's the final product...basically the sphere shape has been broken up into a dynamic flowing band, with contrasting finishes, nestled on a soft pillowey base...
Logitech QuickCam Communicate final 2 - a bit of a droid vibe from this view, but I think thats ok for this tier and target market...
Logitech QuickCam Communicate final 3 - I like the concentric nature of the circular forms in this view, with a nice accomodation for the focus dial...
Logitech QuickCam Communicate final 4 - This shows the actuation of the internal integrated privacy shade, a first for webcams...the logo is nicely framed when its in the closed position within the lens aperture.
Photography - Mark Serr (Bay Area) does great product shots and compositions...
