Gravel steps and planter boxes: I designed and built these steps to resolve a backyard level change, without an easy entry point.

Backyard landscape design- This setting is centered around a 15' x 20' piece of low-maintenance, artificial turf. I wanted to embrace the man-made nature of the artificial turf by surrounding it with a grid of contrasting sections of gravel. The dark areas of .75" lava rock are easily crossed using paver paths that lead the homeowners to and from the key lounging areas in the yard. The lighter areas are filled with .25" pea gravel, which is a less challenging material to walk through and it also provides a good contrast with the larger and darker lava rock. Large stones are scattered throughout the yard, as accents, with a nod to the desert-themed gravel and water-sipping plants that thrive in the California sun.
