Yin and Yang Concept Chairs
The Yin and Yang concept chairs were created as part of a semester-long project for my Design Studio course. The design was inspired by the Taoist ideology of yin and yang - two forces or concepts that both oppose and complement one another, existing in dynamic interdependence as each balances the other. The chairs themselves eschew the traditionally circular, swirling symbology of yin and yang in favor of a more abstract and strictly physical representation. Each chair makes use of positive and negative space (in the form of dowels and dowel holes) to embody the phrase "Yang endows, Yin receives". Although the Yin and Yang chairs can exist independently of one another, they are made to complement one another and can be pushed together side-by-side or back-to-back to create a whole that is visually and conceptually more than the sum of its parts.
Pictured here is the Yin chair, built by hand from 1/2" MDF for the final presentation.
