Hair salons are commonly overlooked
as dangerous work environments.
However, extended use of the
cramped, rigid salon setup causes
an alarmingly high number of
medical issues. These issues can
include: chronic joint pain, heart and
circulatory problems, and skeletal
damage.
This group project also included Sarah Melgen and Jesse Mejia. All sketches and renderings are my own.

Mirror Ideation - The need for a mobile mirror
arose quickly when considering
an adjustable, modular system.
Field research identified the
additional needs of personal
storage and hair product display
space. The client’s visibility of the
stylist via the mirror was also a
concern.
This mobile mirror serves as a
coat closet, a promotional area,
and a partition between stylist’s
stations.

Cart Ideation - Hair stylists have many tools that
need storage, not to mention their
personal items. This mobile storage
unit is designed to roll right next to
the stylist, keeping all tools close
at hand. The storage cavities are accessible from both the folded and unfolded positions. The top of the cart provides a workspace tray and a container for the disinfectant liquid.

Chair Ideation - The client’s head is the center of activity in a hair salon, so it makes sense to have the most important tools nearby. This chair includes holsters for the two most frequently used power tools (razor and hair dryer). The chair can be moved higher or lower to conform to a client’s height, while the armrests can slide in or out to accommodate a client’s girth. Additionally, the seat’s back
can be lowered for work on longer
hair. The chair also rotates a full 360 degrees around it’s base.

Example Salon configuration - The salon elements are modular and mobile. An ideal implementation would be in a large, open space.
