WaterWatch: Home-based Leak Detection System_1 --- "Water is the most common cause of home damages, even greater than fire". Household Insurance companies reported water as the most common and costly claim. Despite smoke detectors’ tremendous market success, water detectors on the other hand are not being widely recognized. The project's objective is to create better product awareness/acceptance through a new design based on marketing, technologies, aesthetics, functional, contextual, and user factors.
WaterWatch: Home-based Leak Detection System_2 --- WaterWatch helps (1) IDENTIFY and LOCATE the source of water leakages, (2) COMMUNICATE with user for immediate action, (3) PREVENT the water from spreading and causing extensive damage, (4) SAVE your life and money, and (5) CONSERVE water resources.
WaterWatch: Home-based Leak Detection System_3 --- WaterWatch system consists of a BASE station and (up to) 15 remote STAND-ALONE detectors. Remote detector will be placed on the floor near the appliances or any other sources of potential water leak location. The base will then connect and integrate all the individual detectors into ONE whole-house system. It alerts humans with auditory and visual alarm once water is present. The base is also equipped with external communication device which is capable of sending out SMS to preset mobile# and/or emails.
WaterWatch: Home-based Leak Detection System_4 --- Appearance-wise, the new design should not focus entirely on functionality, but it also has to be communicative, and emotionally expressive. WaterWatch is a simple, all-white design that emphasizes on the blue ‘ripple effect’. All the design elements (overall mood, shapes, forms, colors, textures, graphic details) are representation of water. It’s clean, subtle, straightforward, and is designed to blend in with home environment.
