The design for custom seating was commissioned by the Museum to serve two primary needs. The first, to facilitate a new audio-visual exhibit that linked specific musical selections and artwork based on one’s seated orientation within the gallery. For the second design requirement, the same seating pieces were to serve as “signature seating” throughout the general galleries of the museum. To meet these needs, a single chair base was conceived to accommodate multiple configurations as a singular stool, dual-orientation bench, and linear or clustered arrangements of chairs with either back support or arm support cushions.
