Urban Revitalization

The Blanchard District is a historic industrial area in East Portland, adjacent to the Willamette River. This district is rundown and polluted, yet it features striking silhouettes of the old industrial buildings and silos. This project examines the creation of The Strand as a connective corridor facilitating safe, accessible, and interactive movement for all modes of active transportation through the district and to nearby destinations. Restoration of natural areas and new mixed-use development is proposed to attract residents and businesses to the area and create an iconic identity that blends historic industry with modern environmental systems. The concept of the strand was originally developed by the City of Portland Planning Department.
