Land Use Planning

The transitional landscape between urban and rural areas faces the pressure of future urban expansion and serves as an ecological buffer to sensitive natural areas. The uncertain severity of future climate change creates a need to transform this landscape into a common zone of defense, such as a native oak savanna habitat, that can withstand and control wildfire. This landscape is also home to residents who prefer the country lifestyle yet enjoy proximity to urban amenities. This project explores alternative development patterns in the transitional landscape area, termed the “fringe zone”. The future scenario modeling software Envision was used to measure density, wildfire resiliency and damage, critical habitat protection, and livability under various intensities of climate change within the next 50 years.
