I needed a wooden mallet for hammering together tight fitting joints without marring the wood.

I started with four possible designs and graded them on strength, ease of construction, and durability. Ultimately, I ended up building the wedged-tenon mallet because it provides the simplest construction without sacrificing strength and durability.
