The basis of this project was to redesign the famous Kikkoman soy sauce cap. With limited materials and focusing on the manufacturing aspect of it. The design problem presented was to be able to have 3 different flows that a user could select all in one cap.
I started by deconstructing the original cap and studying it. With a beautifully simple design, the Kikkoman cap consists or 2 opposite openings that when you pour, one is used to control the flow.
The ideation stage conisted of sketching forms that would tackle the design problem while preserving the elegant design of the original cap. I later took my final iteration into cad and 3d printed it to test if the threads and flow rates worked.
The final design consisted of a spinning top that when aligned with one of the 3 different sized bumps would pour the respective flow of soy sauce. One big problem I encountered during the prototyping stage was that due to the cap not having 2 flows anymore the soy sauce would not pour, cause a vacuum was created. To solve this problem, I added a small hole that would align with one of the respective 2 flow paths that where not in use.
