The brief for this project was to
create a product using keywords:
Die-cast, jittery, spider and alarm clock.
Using observational sketches of real arachnids, we abstracted the characteristics. The results however
were difficult to clearly identify. We discovered that people draw and imagine spiders very differently to how they are naturally constructed, from this insight
we started to develop robotic “spider like” forms which would suit the die cast metal appearance. The clock head of the spider alarm clock was suspended using repelling magnets that created a jittery spider movement. Making the model from clay to gain the most natural
fluid form, we then cast this in silicone, creating a mould that produced identical epoxy legs.
