Shōji Drop off Point - 2nd Year Project
This was my first second year university project, the brief was to design a drop off point for when the user returns home. This wall mounted cabinet was inspired by Japanese sliding paper doors (Shoji) from the Edo Period. When the slats within the circle are horizontal the door is locked, twisting them 90 degrees so that all the slats align, unlocks the door allowing access to that half of the cabinet.
The visual cues in this product are there to hint at how it works. The vertical lines symbolise sturdiness, a lack of movement. Whilst the horizontal slats are a metaphor for willingness of movement.
This product is hand made from Ash, finished with Danish Oil.
