‘Would domestic Microgeneration Devices gain a widespread application in New Zealand, if they were to be Sculpturally Reinterpreted in the manner of Avant-Garde structures?’
This project sought to examine the potential for a de-centralised domestic energy sector in New Zealand, and culminated in the design of a small scale, vertical axis wind turbine.
The primary innovation was the development of an active furling device, driven by the centrifugal force of increasing rotational speeds on the blades. Furling the blades would maintain a constant, optimum level of torque through the generator shaft and stators, and avoid overspeeding the unit.
