It all started here. This is a sculpture I made with a found magazine long before I knew I'd use it for anything else. I wanted this sculpture to be the departure point of the chair I'm designing for DKNY.
Concept chair - I brought a gigantic roll of large bubble wrap. It was fun walking back to my studio with a roll on my back that was twice my size. This was a life-size mock-up.
Concept chair - After a great deal of exploration, I decided to make the second chair with fiberglass. It was one of the few materials that possessed both drapability and strength.
First round of finessed concept in two materials: sheet metal and wood.
Concept chair - This is a shape that I formed while making concept sketches for the other chair. It became my inspiration for another chair.
Concept chair - Stage two of product development: pinpoint keywords of the style I'm going after and explore different materials to see their effect on shapes.
Concept chair - I retained the natural twill weave texture of the fiberglass fabric by making an unconventional mold for the chair. With five layers of bi-directional E-glass, this final prototype is hard as rock.
