The Icelandic Dream - Thesis Project

Site is in Reynisvatnsás - a suburb in Reykjavik. Graduate students got to choose their own client in real life. My client is a single mother of a boy dealing with a disability. The boy walks but uses a wheelchair for support. The mother does not have the option of taking care of him permanently as she lacks the facility to do so safely. The building offers her oversight and peace of mind along with allowing her son to be more independent in his day to day life. The use of the house follows their everyday routine and is a cycle where the morning starts at the lowest level and moves upwards into the day and as the sun goes down and their day ends, the move towards the lowest point. Spaces can be compartmentalized, sliding doors and stars are used as boundaries for the son so he can not hurt himself but stairs also function as rehab. The mother likes to encourage her son stepping up and down stairs so he can learn to do so on his own. Materials are concrete - wood - glass
