Research- Food Waste

Everyday, massive amounts of edible and otherwise
useful food is thrown into trash cans around New York
City. Food is often wasted during more than one period
of its life cycle. Consider a farmer or fisherman, not every
single catch or crop can be processed, packaged and sent
to the store. Some things don’t make the cut, these are
usually odd sized and misshapen “products” and while
they are being inefficiently fed back to the earth humans
are left starving in agriculturally underdeveloped or
desolate regions. Before the items are packaged they must
be examined to ensure that no quality was lost during
transportation, more food is thrown away during this
stage. Granted the food makes it safely onto the shelf, it
must be sold within a certain amount of time or it will be
disposed of and wasted. During the preparation of a meal,
end pieces, fatty pieces, and pieces that are considered
culturally unnatural to eat are disposed of and wasted.
