Cork City Festival House
Cork City Festival House; "shaping the skyline as the creation of all things festival come alive"
The silhouette of Cork City is created by the variation of light levels throughout the day. Common to all riverside building elevations in Cork is the quay wall and the reflection of the building and sky in the water. The multi storey car park in Kyrl’s Quay breaks the silhouette allowing light to pour through the building. The design of the Festival Arts and Crafts Centre makes a pictorial intervention along the river edge in Cork, harnessing the light and allowing the building to be read as a permeable element in the landscape. Workshops in the building are lifted above the roofline to capture and filter the light. The workshops consist of flexible walls and glass panels with a brise soleil cladding. This enables occupants to control the internal environmental conditions while also playing with the permeability of the building silhoutte.
