Concept as a coffee table - This item of furniture was designed for IKEA as part of a group project. The principle behind the concept solves the issue of extra seating being required in the home; the design functions as a stylish coffee table but can be pulled apart and used as 2 comfortable lounge chairs if extra seating is required.
Concept as 2 lounge chairs - If additional seating is required, the design can be separated as shown here; the clips underneath are released, the chairs are pulled apart and the lid is lifted to reveal a seat and padding. If only 1 extra seat is required the other half of the design can be used as a small coffee table. The chairs would be comfortable due to the ergonomic proportions used as well as appearing aesthetically pleasing.
Exploded view of the concept - An essential aspect of IKEA furniture is that it can be easily assembled by the customer. This rendering shows how all of the components fit together. The concept has been designed to slot together with little effort or the need for special tools. The Aluminium side arms give a level of structural rigidity as well aesthetic appeal. The materials for this design have been chosen to portray a high quality image to make the item of furniture more desirable to IKEA customers.
