Exploration for Herman Miller - In late 2004, Mike Garner and I were asked to look at adapting the Jumbo architecture using 13w CFL and obedient tubing joints into an eco-friendly luminaire for Herman Miller that was anxious to get into the lighting market.

Exploration for Herman Miller - 2004 - Sketches of how to adapt the Jumbo design into a more unified and refined design for Herman Miller.

Head and Morph Arm sketches - Exploration around translating the axis of bending for the lower arm vs. the upper head. We need to constrain the lower to one axis and allow the head to articulate as desired.

Rough 3D for Eco Light with Frame head - First 3D studies of arm with bamboo-inspired form. Goal was to keep the lamp as thin and visually lightweight as possible.

Shoji Eco Light with Bamboo inspired arm - Arm with silicone coverings on gooseneck joints similar to Nike watchbands

Touch capacitive button - Top view which shows the flow of the head from the arm like a leaf from the bamboo. The Shoji light incorporates obedient tubing joint covered in silicone to achieve a simplified construction and appearance. It also uses 3M Radiant Film for a highly energy efficient reflector enabling the 13w CFL lamp to output light equivalent to an 18w bulb. The radiant film reflector turns holographic when lit and viewed through window in the top of the lamp head and provides ambient light upwards.

Shoji with Morph Arm - Ultimately Herman Miller decided not to work with me on the design and opted to work with my friend Yves Behar. Yves and the engineer with who I created the Jumbo used this architecture to base the Herman Miller Ardea light which won a 2010 IDSA Award, one of a staggering 16 awards fuseproject was awarded this year.

All AL Morph Arm - It is kinda cool that an architecture designed almost more than 10 years ago can win an award for eco-friendliness today. The Jumbo was actually in some ways even more green in that it used 3M Radiant Film to produce even more light from a 13w CFL and it used less material and cost only $199-250.

Herman Miller Ardea by Yves Behar - The Ardea light designed by Yves Behar utilizing the Jumbo and Shoji architecture won an 2010 IDSA Award almost 10 years after it was first introduced to the market as Jumbo. It was one of 16 IDSA awards won by Yves in 2010.
