GROUP PROJECT - MANENBERG

People living in informal settlements, backyard shacks, RDP homes and subsidised housing have a variety of needs related to access to electricity, water and sanitation, water / flood proofing and fireproofing, ventilation, heating and cooling, space constraints, safety and privacy. The 'Better Living Challenge' provides a platform for the development of appropriate and affordable solutions that address these needs, and is beneficial to the communities.
The aim of this project was to design a housing typology that responds to the social needs of the community and the social context of Manenberg while considering:
- Innovative products and materials used in the construction of homes.
- Innovative approaches and components for self-built homes and structures.
- Systems and products that allows for incremental expansion of existing structures.
- Landscape and community layout design
