Molka-molkajete

Molka-molcajete is an ergonomical reinterpertation of the molcajete; a traditional mexican stone mortar. It has been used since ancient times to grind up spices and is still widely employed today even though it is very heavy and uncomfortable to operate. The design`s objective was to make it more ergonomical and easy to use while preserving the product`s core concept.
Using a five stage methodology; examination, understanding, ideation, experimentations and selection were engaged.
By exploring hand positions with models and force analysis, the final design incorporated a wider range of possible positions and made it more suitable for grinding operations.
A positive mold was made with CNC cut MDF and then a negative mold was made out of silicone rubber. This was used to pour HDPE with a with a volcanic basalt stone insert. The stone has unique durability, brittleness, hardness, permeability and resistance towards abrasive substances and was the best option for the task.
