Sketchbook: Introduction Sketching is vital part of my design process. It acts as a means to a beginning (rather than an end), to visualize ideas, highlight issues and invite critical conversation. The following are exerts from twelve sketch books over twelve years. They represent observations and investigations on a range of projects. I've divided them into the following catergories: Competitions, Studio, Professional and Observations.
Competition sketches: Introduction The red pen is significant in my sketching process. It is used as the base of all my explorations. Inital thoughts, contruction lines and aesthetic decisions are all distinguisable, exposed and layered atop one another. The color red is vibrant enough that old gestures can maintain a life and have the ability to resurface and enfluence the sketch - the idea, yet can be rendered invisible if desired.

Design competition studies: Study attempting to blur transitions and meaning of the ground plane
Studio sketches: Introduction The next series of sketches were generated during academic studios. They tend to be the most expressive as the studio environment thrives on asking questions and challenging the status quo.

Professional sketches: Introduction The next series of slides are exerts of sketches in conjunction with professional works. These are expressions of sketching as a communicative problem solving tool.

Interior study - Hybrid space: Display case, work table, foyer entry for an artist's studio
Concierge desk studies: Design study investigating use of mutli performance finish/material
Interior study - Multi level entry sequence. (See Professional works sets, Dusable Museum Roundhouse wing).
Various detail investigations
Facade study: Schematic design studies for the Spicer Residence.
Observation sketches: Introduction The next series of sketches are expressions of a more traditional but equally important role of sketching; Observations. Simular to photography, when one sketches what he appreciates the forms get burned into the subconscious. The hand is thus trained to mimic the appreciated silhouettes.
Observation: Collapsed barn in Wisconsin
Observation: Sketch of an art exhibit in milawaukee
