This is a project I made as a student in School of Design, Zagreb. It was mentored by prof. Andrea Hercog. The theme of project was furniture made of hardwood. The concept is described with renderings and description text.
This is a modernised type of historic bureau desk, which started as a small, transportable piece of furniture one could carry on a trip, then becoming throughout renaissance the grand bureau desk with numerous drawers and secret compartments.
The shape is accomplished by reducing volume and making it more dynamic. It is lighter and its silhouette is sculptural, making it lighter in space, but keeping its presence beautiful and harmonius with modern interiors.
To allow the shape to remain dynamic, but keep the functionality of a highly organizable desk when both open or closer, I made the inside layout customizable.
The closed version has a strong stance, but stays simple and clean.
The open version show the spaciousness of the desk is its strong side. The main working board is kept in place by a strong drawer that is drawn outside to support it.
The secret compartment is made to pay respect to the historic bureau, and to make its owner relate more personally with the desk.
The option of keeping something on the surface of the desk, while it is in closed position, is available by adding a slat. It also make short-termed standing work possible.
Making of the 3D model confirmed the possibility and truth of this concept, as it allowed me to test the strenght of the drawer, reality of available space and the impression of the form in real space.
