I took apart existing smoke detectors which showed me that they only contain a basic circuit between the alarm and sensor which I needed to maintain. This left ample room for additional components and a light fixture.
Key factors I explored through sketching were sensor placement, heat sink location for the LED fixtures, and housing styling.
Features for the app would include an initial warning, test function, and options for silencing false alarms for a set time period.
